Keeping our Promise to Children: the Relevance of Korczak’s Legacy for Children Today

The first lecture of the series “How to Love a Child” was a well-organized and well- attended event at the Robert H. Lee Alumni Centre.

The speakers were, Dr. Blye Frank, Dean of Education at the University of British Columbia; Dr. Krzysztof Olendzki, Consul General of the Republic of Poland; Mr. Jerry Nussbaum, President of the Janusz Korczak Association of Canada; Lillian Boraks-Nemetz, author and board member as well as 3 panelists, Rachel Malek, Jess Boon and James Copping. Mr. Irwin Elman, Provincial Advocate for Children and Youth of Ontario, and President, Canadian Council of Child and Youth Advocates, delivered a very inspiring keynote lecture entitled  “Keeping our promise to children: the relevance of Korczak’s legacy for children today”. The session was moderated by Dr. Charles Ungerleider.

Each of the speakers enlightened the audience with words and ideas on the rights of children. They spoke about their work, and on the profile of Janusz Korczak in whose spirit these lectures are being held.

A beautiful poster of Dr. Janusz Korczak and the Children faced us as we were greeted by a First Nations Musqueam representative, Marny Point. Mathew Lee, the first recipient of the Janusz Korczak Graduate Scholarship for his work in the area of Children’s Rights, was awarded a certificate by The Janusz Korczak Association. The three panelists were asked one last question by the Consul General of the Republic of Poland about their ideology on how to love a child. The consensus was, that with respect, acknowledgement of their rights and care, children will grow into good, responsible individuals.

With their words this very successful event came to a close.
