UBC SUMMER INSTITUTE: CHILD ADVOCACY IN ACTION – THE LEGACY OF JANUSZ KORCZAK

The Summer Institute, a first of its kind offering in North America, is a result of a collaboration between the Janusz Korczak Association of Canada and UBC’s Faculty of Education. The course was taught by Dr. Tatyana Tsyrlina-Spady, a professor at the Seattle Pacific University School of Education. She is an experienced academic and a well-established researcher in the fields of comparative education and the history of education and has been teaching and practicing Dr. Korczak’s ideas for the last three decades.

The Institute offered a unique opportunity to participate in workshops, discussions and seminars led by a group of international scholars, educators, children’s rights advocates, pediatricians and writers from Canada, France, Poland, Rwanda and the USA. It provided an opportunity for engaged dialogue about critical curricular and pedagogical issues, and inspired motivation for innovative practice. The opening address was delivered by the Honorable Janet Austin, OBC, Lieutenant Governor of British Columbia, Dr. Blye Frank, Dean of Faculty of Education and Jerry Nussbaum, the president of The Janusz Korczak Association of Canada.
